The Grand Old Man of Victorian art and architecture – and champion of the pre-Raphaelites – John Ruskin occupied this magnificent country home above the shores of Coniston Water from 1872 until his death in 1900. Many of the rooms, including his study, have been beautifully preserved, while exhibitions expound upon Ruskin’s work and philosophy. There are also dramatic hillside gardens and all sorts of activities and events throughout the year – from family days to lace-making, plus an excellent café.
