There’s a thriving set of craft and foodie businesses housed in buildings in the former mill yard at Staveley, a little village that lies just off the main road between Kendal and Windermere. And there’s plenty of parking space, so you can stop by and browse the showrooms, whether it’s organic bread or hand-turned furniture you’re looking for. A couple of cafés provide drinks and meals, and there’s the independent Hawkshead Brewery too with its own beer hall and café, not to mention bike hire from Wheelbase, the UK’s largest cycle store, also in the yard.
