The Angel boasts a long and distinguished history, as there’s been a hostelry of sorts located on this site since the 17th century. These days, the hotel is part of a Spanish-owned chain, which has managed to preserve much of the building’s Victorian grandeur, and although the 100 or so rooms don’t quite live up to the promise of the richly decorated lobby, they are amply sized, with high ceilings, smart vaguely Art Deco furnishings and modern bathrooms. The hotel’s plum central location, on a diagonal between the Castle and the Millennium Stadium, means that it’s often rammed with visiting rugby fans, so during the season you’ll need to book well in advance.
