Hillside Ashprington
South West England Devon Totnes
- Sleeps 4
- Cottage
This charming two-bedroom cottage ticks all the boxes for a grown-up getaway in South Devon. That’s not to say children aren’t allowed here; they are – and dogs are welcome too – but it’s adults who we think will enjoy it the most. After all, it takes an seasoned eye to appreciate the stylish, pared-back interiors and original artwork on the walls. It’s also grown-ups who will pop the cork from the bottle of local sparkling wine that’s left as a welcome gift. And it’s they who will be pleased that there’s a pub next door, with two more within walking distance. There are plenty of other places for longer legs to walk as the final box this place ticks is the location. It’s in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and within reach of both Dartmoor and the coast. It's worth noting too that the cottage is perfect for couples, who receive a 10% discount on all stays.
From the outside, Hillside Ashprington, is cute as a button, with stone walls, symmetrical windows and a garden path leading to it. You might expect to step inside and find somewhere rather twee but in fact it's been kitted out with a great deal of flair and taste. Downstairs, it’s all wood, leather and natural hues with a balance between original and modern features. A huge and comfy leather corner sofa, for example, is warmed by a log burner in the inglenook. The chimney breast above it is one of several walls that’s been left as it was revealed during renovation – perfectly imperfect, as owner Serena puts it. It’s a desirable finish, for sure, but one that only comes with age.
The dining room and well-equipped kitchen have been similarly thought through, with quality fabrics and furniture and the eye of an interior designer. There are books on the shelves and paintings on the walls but no unnecessary clutter. Importantly, it’s kept immaculately clean. Upstairs, there’s more colour and comfort where it counts. Both rooms have kingsized beds, quality linen, towels and toiletries. The bathroom has both a walk-in shower and a roll top bath. The place is designed to sleep four but is not too big to work for just a couple, and there's a couples discount too. While outside, the tranquil rear garden overlooking allotments is a perfect sun trap.
If you fancy more than the few steps to the neighbouring Durrant Arms, you can walk straight out into Devon countryside. It’s not far to the River Dart and you can follow its banks to visit two local pubs or, for five miles, into Totnes. Jump in the car and more of the county is on offer: Dartmoor is 25-minutes’ drive in one direction, beaches are the same distance in the other. Choose from: Mothercombe, Bantham and Blackpool Sands. Or, better still, visit them all.
