Blackwell
Blackwell Bowness-on-Windermere LA23 3JT
The most beautiful private house in the Lake District? It’s not too much of an accolade for Blackwell, a perfectly restored Arts and Crafts mansion (built 1898–1900) on the shores of Windermere that’s the masterwork of architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott. Every detail tells a story, from the intricately carved panelling to the vibrant stained glass, and the best way to appreciate the amazing interior is to arrive in time for one of the daily guided tours. A terrace tea room has views of the lake, and there’s also a super shop selling contemporary designer ceramics and jewellery – you don’t need to pay for entrance to the house to visit either the café or shop.
