The Old School in Little Compton, in the heart of the Cotswolds, is our kind of B&B. Not only do all of its four bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, Egyptian cotton sheets and duvets (no blankets!), along with everything else you would expect of a decent boutique hotel – robes, toiletries, a flatscreen TV and DVD player, and good free wifi. But it's also achieves the perfect balance between being ridiculously friendly while still allowing as much privacy and anonymity as you want. Young children aren't welcomed but it's really not that kind of place anyway. We love the cosy comfort of its rooms, decked out with fresh flowers, and the uniqueness of the former school house location. But most of all we like it for its emphasis on food and the hospitality of its owner Wendy Veale, who is an enthusiastic food writer and stylist and cooks up a storm for breakfast, while also providing excellent supper tray, picnic lunches and four-course dinners on request. She uses only local suppliers, so it's a good way of tasting seasonal local produce fresh from the farm or farmers' market, before buying it to take back home.
