If you're looking for a romantic break for two in the Cotswolds, then you needn't look further than the delightfully named Ratty's Retreat, part of a complex of barn conversions in what is by Cotswolds standards, the relatively unknown and unspoiled village of Blockley just outside Moreton-in-Marsh. Ratty's Retreat is small but perfectly formed – one large room essentially, on two floors, with a sitting room downstairs and a bedroom on the upper galleried floor, reached by a spiral staircase. The ground floor has a comfy sitting and dining area with Freeview TV and DVD and a CD player, and a well-equipped galley kitchen, while upstairs the bedroom has an antique king-size half-tester bed – the sort of thing Anne Boleyn might have entertained Henry VIII in – a wall-mounted TV and en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and toilet. There is parking and a private patio area with garden furniture and the barn complex's grounds are lovely for a stroll, with a small bubbling brook overhung by willows. As for Blockley, it's hard to know why it's not better-known. It's a classic Cotswolds village, with golden stone houses nestled among green rolling hills; it has a couple of pubs, a gurgling mill stream and a venerable and rather pretty late-Norman parish church; plus it's relatively easy to reach, being only three miles outside Moreton-in-Marsh, which has a mainline railway station. It is also a great base for lots of lovely walks in the northern Cotswolds. Just the thing for a couple looking for a weekend away in some classic English countryside.

The Owner Says

We have offered Ratty's Retreat as self catering accommodation since 2006. Prior to that it had been a holiday cottage for the previous owners for 25 years.  When we bought it we tried to make it a bit more contemporary whilst still being sympathetic to the fact that it is a beautiful period property in the heart of the Cotswolds. We have recently replaced the lounge sofas with 2 superbly comfortable leather ones and have upgraded the CD player to a wireless docking station.

We offer the usual initial tea and coffee making necessities, a good bottle of wine with others on hand for you to 'borrow' should you run out, sumptuous bedding and towels together with luxury robes. The freesat TV can be watched downstairs or upstairs on either of the flat screen TVs. You will find a large brolly along with a torch and an ordnance survey map to borrow should you need to along with tons of different walking route suggestions.
