This beautifully-restored Cotswolds church offers dog-friendly, self-catering stays – and a high wow factor!
Situated between Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh, the Cotswolds village of Paxford is home to The Old Mission Church. You won’t miss it, as this one-of-a-kind self-catering holiday cottage is a stand-out building in this pretty village – a sensitively renovated 19th-century school and church which was called “magnificent” by TV presenter George Clarke and “wow-inducing” by The Times. We’re not going to argue with either. It’s a holiday home that’s architecturally interesting, historically rich, and stylishly well equipped. If you’re looking for a memorable stay in the Cotswolds, you can stop your search right here.
With two en-suite double bedrooms, it’s very much a grown-up place to stay, and a favourite for special occasions. Birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons and proposals all regularly take place against this backdrop of honey-coloured stone, stained-glass windows and countryside views.
From the outside, you might think that The Old Mission Church still serves its original purpose, but push open its substantial wooden doors and you’ll see how wholeheartedly it’s been transformed. There's a modern kitchen with a breakfast bar, a lounge area with a log burner, a plush sofa and a Smart TV, above which is one of the bedrooms. A bespoke glass and steel staircase takes you to the mezzanine ‘pod’. Raised aloft in the eaves, this bedroom is cleverly designed with a glazed screen for privacy, but remains well connected to the rest of the open-plan space. The pod's interior is a plushly carpeted cocoon that’s still got substantial headroom under the beams. The other bedroom, although firmly on the ground floor, is no less impressive, with the full height of the building visible above its king-size bed and luxurious freestanding bath.
Despite these modern, architect-designed additions, there’s never any doubt that you’re in what was once a church, thanks to the stained-glass window over the dining table, the leaded windows with their stone surrounds, and plenty of other historical features. It works as a romantic retreat for two or a place for two couples to holiday together – and dogs are welcome, too. They’ll enjoy the footpaths across fields that start just outside the front door. One of them leads, in a couple of miles, to the foodie Ebrington Arms, which boasts two AA Rosettes and gets a nod in the Michelin Guide. It’s only a couple of miles more to The Horse and Groom, recently touted as England's best pub. And when it comes to the country’s finest, there’s much more of that to enjoy. Chipping Campden is three miles away and Blockley village is even closer – two of the prettiest places in the UK.
