Of all the handsome stone villages that dot the Cotswolds, Broadway is one of the most impressive, and it’s here that you’ll find the charming – and charmingly luxurious – Lygon Arms. There has been a hotel here since medieval times, but most of what you see today dates from the 17th century, from the charming honey-coloured stone of the main façade to the vaulted Great Hall. As an ancient coaching inn on the road from London to Wales, the Lygon has long attracted the rich and powerful, including Oliver Cromwell, who stayed here in 1651, and his arch-enemy, Charles I, who visited a few years before – with both of their suites surviving to this day.
Nowadays, the hotel is popular with visitors touring the Cotswolds, and its 86 guest rooms – from ‘cosy’ to classic and ‘deluxe’ – divide between the main building, the courtyard and nearby cottages. All are decorated in pastel shades with splashes of colour, period flourishes and a scattering of paintings. The Lygon is also particularly welcoming to dog owners: dogs are allowed to roam the garden and most of the public areas, and many of the bedrooms are dog-friendly, with doggie beds thrown in for good measure. They can also arrange for a dog grooming session during your stay.
