Wallace's Arthouse Scotland
South Scotland Lothian Edinburgh
- Boutique Hotel
Hidden away on the top floor of the listed Leith Assembly Rooms lies a quirky gem of a B&B with arty talking points galore. The well-travelled owner Wallace Shaw worked as a knitwear designer for Donna Karan and Pringle for many years and recently ran an Arts Centre in Spoleto, Umbria, and he has similar ambitions to make his B&B an artistic centre. Exhibitions, ad hoc music performances and cultural happenings are held throughout the year, and even when they're not, there's a cool, arty vibe to this upmarket two-room B&B, with paintings and artworks strewn around the hallway and communal rooms, rubbing shoulders with eye-catching vintage photos, bric-a-brac and object d'arts. An African paper machier newsprint elephant hangs in the hallway, while the kitchen studio lights appear to be made from tea cups. There are are a few choice touches of cheekiness too: an erotic table lamp from Thailand which gets 'turned on' in more than one way, while a selection of mantlepiece photos display kilted Scots in varying states of (un)dress. The bedrooms are spacious and stylishly decorated with sheepskin rugs and plenty of sleek, white Italian designer furnishings. Wallace is an easy-going, genial gent who clearly enjoys opening his home up to others, and extending a warm welcome with a chilled bottle of Prosecco at the ready.
