Chesters By The River
Skelwith Bridge Near Ambleside LA22 9NJ
From the bridge over the River Brathay you can walk up through the slate works to the gushing waterfall of Skelwith Force, at its best after rain. Your best move then is straight into Chesters for a drink on the riverside terrace and a lazy lunch. It’s a snappy, buzzy, almost metropolitan space – quite unlike the rustic surroundings – and the food is a cut above your usual café fare; think pancake-and-maple-syrup breakfasts, superior salads, posh fish pie and absolutely scrummy cakes and puds, with everything made and baked on site.
