Brilliantly run by its friendly owners, The Cavalaire manages the rare feat of being both stylish and refreshingly unpretentious – a bit like Brighton itself in fact! Situated in the heart of the funky Kemptown district, its ten rooms vary a lot in size, but all are comfortable and contemporary, with good, recently refurbished bathrooms kitted out with powerful showers and good quality toiletries, tea and coffee-making facilities with real milk and biscuits – plus flatscreen Freeview TVs and digital radios. And even if you don’t treat yourself to one of the four-posters, you’ll find your bed made with high-end linen and loaded with colourful cushions. The breakfast, too, served in the bright and tasteful dining room, is first-class, with lots of locally sourced ingredients, pancakes as an option, as well as a fab veggie alternative, and good coffee. Basically, though, there's no secret to the Cavalaire's success, which is mostly down to owners who are prepared to go the extra mile for their guests and whose eye for detail is impeccable.

The Cavalier is a 15-minute walk from Brighton station, or a 5-minute taxi ride. By car, follow the signs for the city centre to the seafront and at the roundabout turn left onto Marine Parade; turn left at the first traffic lights, then left into Lower Rock Gardens and continue straight on at the next traffic lights into Upper Rock Gardens. The Cavalaire is on the right.
