The Linen Shed
England South East England Kent
- Boutique Hotel
The Linen Shed, which sits in the little village of Boughton in the foodie north Kent heartland, really is a lovely find. From the moment you spot the house set above the road, its soft grey weatherboarding set off by the abundance of silvery shrubs and lavender out front, you know you’re in for something special. The building, for a start – beautifully converted from a couple of old Nissan huts and bathed in light – presides over the street, grand yet homely. Inside, each of the three guest rooms is different, but all are very pretty, oozing vintage and shabby chic style; two of them, with a vaguely French provincial feel, have their own private shower or bathrooms, while the third, the smaller, slightly more Deco-inspired 'Bird Room', its back wall sparkling with mirrors, shares a bathroom with the owners. None of the guest rooms have locks; this is a laid-back, friendly place, where the hosts are welcoming you to share their home. Upstairs is an open, gloriously stylish living area, a vintage lover's dream – you can chat to your hosts awhile here, make yourself a hot drink, say hello to the cats or perhaps plonk a bottle of something fizzy in their fridge to drink later. On warm evenings the verandah overlooking the back garden is a very seductive option. And the mornings are an event in themselves, with a stunning home-cooked breakfast – vine-roasted tomatoes with crispy Parma ham, perhaps, or potato rosti with eggs, or a seriously posh Full English – served either on the verandah or in the lovely dining room.
