Check out YHA York and it's easy to see that hostels have come a long way over the last few years. We're talking budget-hotel standard these days in many cities, and with the competition in York as it is, the YHA have put a serious amount of money into refashioning their 'hostel' as a grown-up hotel.
It's in a great location for a start – a 15-minute riverside walk from the city centre, which puts just enough distance between you and the tourist hordes at the end of the day (or it's 5 minutes on the bus). There are over 200 beds across 45 rooms, and 32 of these are en-suite so you don't have to share facilities unless you're really looking to save money. There's free wifi in the hostel's public areas, and a 24-hour cafe-bar serving food at lunchtime and in the evening; they also do great breakfasts.
Like a lot of YHA hostels it's perfect for families, with large rooms that accommodate a family of four comfortably, and of course they have the regular backpacker beds too, in dorms that are clean and secure. There's also a self-catering kitchen and bike store. Finally, the staff are professional and ultra-welcoming. Great value all round – one of our fave places to stay in York.

Getting There

From the City centre take the A19 north, turning left at the Old Grey Mare onto Water End, then go 300m. From the A1237 Northern Ring Road, take the A19 towards the city and turn right at the third set of traffic lights.
