There's friendly and welcoming – and then there's Lucy's, perhaps the most amiable restaurant of them all, where if they know you're coming you might even get a hello on the daily changing menu. It's a really relaxed place that's a café by day and a restaurant from 6pm onwards, with the menu shifting from breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and afternoon teas to things like Cumbrian lamb or Mediterranean pasta in the evening. Puddings are legion and legendary, with traditional tastes right to the fore, from sticky banana pud to Cumberland bread pudding with rum sauce. There are several different dining areas, including a sun-trap walled garden, but even so you'll need to book, especially at evenings and weekends.
