You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to boutique B&Bs in Hastings, but Swan House – one of the first – still manages to steal a bit of a march on the competition. This is mainly down to its location, which is about as perfect as you could ask for, tucked back from the busy seafront on a quiet, picturesque street in the Old Town; the fishing quarter, Jerwood Gallery, and galleries, antique shops and cafés of the High Street are all just a minute or two’s walk away. Inside, Swan House is every bit as lovely as its fifteenth-century, half-timbered exterior promises; there are four tasteful bedrooms decked out in tranquil, muted tones(‘Renaissance’ is the pick of the bunch, with bags of space and its own roof terrace), plus a large, low-beamed living area with an honesty bar. Breakfasts are a splendid affair, with eggs, dairy, bacon, sausages and jams all sourced from Sussex, and fish fresh-off-the-boat from the fishing quarter just down the road.
