As part of the restaurant-focused D&D Group, you'd expect the food offering at their only hotel to be pretty good, and the South Place Hotel, in the heart of the City of London, doesn't disappoint. Not only does it have an excellent and very busy restaurant on its ground floor, The Chophouse, it also boasts one of only half a dozen Michelin-starred restaurants in the City in Angler – a sleek affair at the top of the building where the views are only surpassed by the quality of the food. The hotel also boasts no less than five convivial bars, including an outside terrace bar that is as good a place to drink a cocktail in summer as anywhere in the City that you'll find.
But the South Place is not just about food. As the only hotel to be built in the Square Mile in the last 100 years, it has 80 very comfortable rooms, ranging from entry-level Loft rooms to Studios and Suites; all have ultra-fast wifi, high-end TVs with Freeview, digital radios, minibars and Nespresso machines and all have decent sized bathrooms with baths except the Loft rooms. The hotel also has as a good-sized gym, sauna and steam room – and a fleet of bikes if you fancy getting around on two wheels.
The hotel's location just off Moorgate naturally means it's a top choice for City and corporate folk, but really this would be a good place to stay whatever had brought you to London. There is no more historic part of the capital than the City, which stretches out from the hotel in all directions; and you are close to the Barbican arts centre in one direction and to the hip and happening restaurant and bar Shoreditch and Hoxton in the other. Moorgate tube is also just a two-minute walk away so you can be anywhere you want in no time.
But perhaps what we like best about the South Place is the fact that all of its 80 rooms are dog-friendly, and that they don't just tolerate dogs and their owners, but lay on beds, towels and treats as well as providing a mapbook showing the best dog walks nearby (of which there are plenty). Small- to medium-sized dogs are preferred but to be honest they are pretty flexible, and dogs go free in the higher category rooms; they also run the odd doggie event from time to time – for example dog friendly film screenings and even a doggie afternoon tea!
