This snazzy Victorian-era hotel in Paddington with an unusual name has a no-frills outlook: the pooch-friendly spot may have no front desk, room service, baths or mini bars, but don't let that put you off – their refreshing approach is appealing to the modern traveller. There's no formal check-in, just a downstairs café serving great coffee, but the place is certainly not without charm and warmth; a true celebration of British craftsmanship, marvel at the 200-year-old parquet flooring and original period lighting throughout. With Jason Catifeoglou – formerly of the Zetter collection – at the helm, style is at the forefront, with cast iron reclaimed radiators, soothing tones, Egyptian cotton sheets and towels, original artwork, mattresses handmade in Devon and a selection of books and magazines featuring in the bedrooms.

Fusing contemporary with vintage, the 73 rooms are divided into four categories: bunk, the dinkiest at 7sqm; small, ideal for budget-conscious couples or friends; medium, a more capacious space complete with a floating double bed; and large, with kings or superkings, plenty of space at 14sqm and views over the neighbourhood. All the rooms except Bunks have Freeview TVs, real plants,  USB sockets and Marshall bluetooth speakers. Guests have free rein over the Pantry on each floor and can grab water from there as and when they please (just ask for your own recyclable bottle), and at ground level Workshop Coffee is a casual setting for a steaming cup of joe – with baked goodies from Yeast Bakery and Fortitude Bakehouse, it's the ideal pit stop. Up on the first floor lounge guests can enjoy a bite to eat, with the likes of Le Swine bacon sarnie or fluffy pancakes for brekkie, and their signature toasties with fries or baked chickpeas with chorizo served with crusty bread for lunch. Drink-wise, there's a tempting array to choose from, including their in-house created Spritz made with Prosecco and fig leaf cordial and the Pilgrm, mixed with light rum and verjus lime sherbet.

Located just by Paddington station, the hotel lies in an excellent position: sitting next to Norfolk Square, close to Marylebone and Notting Hill and just a 15 minute stroll to Hyde Park and the scenic Serpentine, it's a top-notch choice for a stay in the capital, not to mention easily accessible to Heathrow.
