The spiritual home of music in the capital, and a place that played a major role in the careers of David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Elton John and the Sex Pistols, 100-yard Denmark Street also houses Chateau Denmark – an uber-sleek place to stay that pays homage to the area’s unique history, and where discretion and privacy are the name of the game.
Spread across 16 characterful buildings (keep your eye out for their trademark coiling snake door knockers), the 55 rooms, signature suites and apartments were designed by Taylor Howes and inspired by punk rock, psychedelia and vintage gothic – think rich textures, dramatic finishes, bespoke headboards, statement lighting, striking artwork, and House of Hackney wallpaper and fabric. There’s butler service too, and some units offer maxi bars, stocked pre-arrival with your beverages of choice. Many original architectural features were lovingly restored and each space has its own backstory – some sit in the Now Building, others above Denmark Street’s iconic shops.
For drinks and dining, check out Thirteen, an opulent all-day hangout and cocktail bar serving Japanese small plates. Downstairs, you’ll find dial8, an intimate spot that’s ideal for private events, complete with the largest scale print of ‘Soho Tableaux’ by Damien Frost. There’s also Tattu, dishing up contemporary Chinese fare. If you feel the need to stray further afield, Covent Garden and Fitzrovia are on your doorstep. But it won’t be long before you head back to the sublime yet quietly rockin' comfort of Chateau Denmark.
