A former wool store and field hospital during the Napoleonic wars, Jeake’s House is another Rye gem, this time in a plush, old-school, Laura Ashley kind of way. Its decoration is rich and busy and a bit overwhelming for some, but there’s no doubt about the comfort in this labyrinthine little house on Mermaid Street. From outside it actually looks rather understated, hiding the luxury within, dominated downstairs by dark oaks and leather. Steep stairs lead you up to the upper floors where the rooms of this small hotel have been named after literary and artistic figures that have visited Rye and the former residents of Jeakes House. This is five-star accommodation and despite being an old establishment in the town it's up to date with everything you need for modern comfort.
