Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside, just a few miles west of Oxford on the eastern fringes of the Cotswolds, Artist Residence Oxfordshire is the ultimate country inn – with 15 bedrooms tucked away in the eaves, outbuildings and garden, plus excellent food and drink served in their pub, The Mason Arms.
The rooms really set this place apart, equipped with large, comfy beds, powerful showers and the sort of vintage-tinged but contemporary decor we've come to expect from the quirky Artist Residence group (which has sister properties in London, Brighton, Bristol, and Penzance). Rooms all have free wifi, flatscreen Freeview TVs, digital radios, Nespresso coffee machines, and mini-fridges stocked with local goodies – and there are Bramley toiletries in the bathrooms, some of which have standalone rolltop baths. The rooms range in size, from the compact 'Rabbit Hole' through the more spacious 'Farmhouse Loft' rooms (which are dog-friendly) to the lovely 'Farmhouse Suite', which has a lovely copper bathtub in the room itself, a separate bathroom with shower and an adjoining seating area. Three rooms (all Fido-friendly) located in the outbuildings include the spacious 'Stable Suite’, a luxurious take on the bohemian countryside retreat; ‘Stable”, with its private terrace; and ‘Barn Suite’, which comes complete with a four poster. Fancy something a bit different? Overlooking the herb garden there’s a homely Shepherd’s Hut to hunker down in. If that's not enough, additional options range from the small but perfectly formed Burrows to the Potting Shed, with its own private entrance.
Back in the tavern, enjoy an open fire, local ales, armchairs to lounge about in, and homemade bar snacks. But they also serve a full menu in the dining room that hits all the right buttons – local, seasonal produce, beautifully cooked and presented. It’s been included in the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide 2017, as well as being rated as a 5* inn. All in all, we love the confident, distinctive way the whole package is put together – very contemporary but with a traditional approach to comfort, service and food. It will certainly have you coming back for more.

Artist Residence is a 15-minute drive form Oxford – just follow the A40 from the city and make a left just before Witney. The nearest train stations are Hanborough and Charlbury, from where it's a 15–20-minute taxi journey – call one in advance on 07919 675150 or let the hotel know your time of arrival and they will book a cab for you.
