Part of the Rick Stein empire, the excellent, casual St Petroc's Bistro has ten guest rooms upstairs that are simplicity itself – furnished, you have to say, in a way that makes you wonder why all moderately priced hotels aren't done like this, with functional, tasteful furniture (and not too much of it), working fireplaces, and a decor that is just the right side of minimalist, done out in neutral shades with the odd splash of colour. Rooms range in size from 'cosy' to 'generous' but all have en-suite bathrooms that are luxuriously decked out with high-quality towels and toiletries and equipped with good quality showers; some rooms have free-standing baths that on the upper floor are cosily situated beneath exposed wooden beams. Many of the rooms have simple four-posters but in any case all have comfy beds furnished with decent cotton sheets and duvets. Rates include breakfast served in the bistro, which is as you would expect pretty good, although you can also have a continental breakfast served in your room.
