If there is a more glamorous hostel location in Britain we’d love to know about it. The YHA’s flagship Lake District hostel has an amazing waterside position on England's largest lake, Windermere, with a terrace, and lakeview restaurant and bar that plenty of far more expensive places would kill for. The central lakeland mountains are in full view, Windermere cruise boats run from the nearby jetty, while the enjoyable little town of Ambleside is just a mile's walk away – basically, location, location, location.
The hostel occupies a big old slate building – originally a hotel – that has its own jetty and waterside picnic benches. If it's years since you've been, you'll be surprised at the revamp, since they've spent a lot of money smartening up the rooms and public spaces. Most of the bunk-style rooms have lake views and, with 65 rooms sleeping around 250 people (2 to 6 people in a room), they are just as good for couples as families. Eleven rooms have en-suites but they go quickly, so book well in advance if you want one; and there's one ground-floor accessible room, which can only be booked by calling the hostel directly. Otherwise, showers and toilets are shared, but there are lots of them, and facilities, from self-catering kitchen to kayak rental, are uniformly excellent.

YHA Ambleside is ideally situated in walking distance of the charming village of Ambleside and within easy access of all the action-packed activities the Lake District can offer. After a day of walking, climbing or canoeing, relax in our modern bar and restaurant, serving a variety of fantastic food and local brews, and end the day gazing over the lake from our decked terrace.
Enjoy all Ambleside has to offer, with plenty of shops to peruse, a choice of cinemas and many fantastic pubs to rejuvenate after an activity filled day. Our team members are there to help – don't forget to ask about our outdoor activity packages available to groups, or if you fancy a walk they'll happily point you in the direction of the local walking routes.

By road, come off the M6 at junction 36, and follow the A591 via Windermere to Waterhead. The hostel is 1 mile south of Ambleside town. There is limited parking on site.
